What is Remedial Massage?
Remedial massage is a therapeutic form of massage therapy that focuses on identifying, assessing and treating musculoskeletal problems, pain, injury, tension and movement dysfunction. It’s a hands-on approach that goes beyond general relaxation. While many people may still find it relaxing, remedial massage aims to support healing, function, and physical wellbeing.
Why Is It Called “Remedial” Massage?
The term remedial comes from the idea of “remedying” or addressing a specific health concern rather than merely promoting relaxation. In practice, remedial massage involves:
- A detailed assessment of posture, range of motion and muscle imbalance
- A treatment plan tailored to a person’s needs
- Techniques that target underlying structures and sources of pain or dysfunction, rather than simply applying soothing strokes all over the body
In Australia, a therapist must complete formal training (typically a Diploma of Remedial Massage) and adhere to professional standards to be recognised as a Remedial Massage Therapist by industry associations and health insurers. These qualifications cover anatomy, physiology, pathology, assessment skills and specific therapeutic techniques.
