Types & Styles of Relaxation Massage

In a broad stroke, many styles of massage can promote relaxation depending upon pressure and rhythm. Some are more subtle and gentle while some styles involve warmth, oils, or specific trigger points to enhance the calming experience.

Let’s work through it gently, in no particular order:

1. Swedish Massage

This style is widely regarded as the classic relaxation massage, Swedish massage uses long, smooth strokes, light kneading and rhythmic touch to relax the muscles and improve circulation.

Main repeated strokes include:

Effleurage: light, soothing gliding movements

Petrissage: gentle kneading and rolling

Tapotement: rhythmic tapping

Friction: circular pressure to warm tissues

2. Aromatherapy Massage

This aromatic massage includes essential oils selected for their calming and uplifting properties. Essential oils such as lavender and chamomile are often used to enhance relaxation and mood, making the session feel more restorative.

The essential oils may be diffused and/or applied during the massage session.

3. Hot Stone Massage

As the name suggests, heated stones are used during the massage. These smooth stones are placed on key points of the body and may also be used by the massage therapist to perform strokes. The heat helps muscles relax more quickly, promoting deeper calm and easing tension in a soothing way.

4. Shiatsu Massage

Originating in Japan, Shiatsu uses rhythmic pressure at specific body points using fingers, palms or thumbs. It is often performed fully clothed and can reduce tension, promote relaxation, and support overall balance.

5. Thai Massage

Thai massage blends rhythmic compression, stretches and acupressure. The recipient may be clothed or (best) enjoying it with body oil. The stretches and mobilisations alongside massage promotes flexibility and eases tension. It can be both relaxing and rejuvenating.

6. Reflexology

Reflexology is a therapeutic practice that stimulates reflex points in the feet (or sometimes hands/ears). It is believed that the feet, hands, ears, and iris contains maps of the body, where each reflex point corresponds to a particular organ, gland, or body system. Reflexology aims to support the body’s natural healing processes while promoting overall wellbeing and relaxation.

Among these massage types and styles, Cheryl is trained in massage strokes from Swedish massage and (light-touch) reflexology. She can recommend a great Thai massage place.
